DAY 02 of 7 · The industry we funded

The OnlyFans economy nobody talks about

OnlyFans is sold as the great democratizing creator economy. Anyone can be a creator. Make money on your own terms. Be your own boss.

The actual numbers tell a different story.

According to a 2020 analysis of about 1,000 OnlyFans accounts by Thomas Hollands:

— The top 1% of OnlyFans creators earn about 33% of all platform revenue. — The top 10% take roughly 73% of all earnings. — The median active creator earns approximately $136 per month after the platform's 20% cut.

One way to measure how fairly money is split is to compare it to a country's income distribution. By that measure, OnlyFans is more unequal than any country on Earth. Not "more unequal than most." More unequal than every single one.

What this means: the "creator economy" framing is mostly marketing. Most creators are extracting very little. A small fraction of users are spending compulsively to support a small fraction of creators. The platform is the only entity making consistent money — and the platform is built to keep both ends of that pipe flowing.

You weren't supporting an empowered worker. You were one of the obsessed minority funding a system that was using both you and the people on the screen.

Takeaway

OnlyFans is more income-unequal than any country on Earth. The 'creator economy' is a marketing story. The actual structure: most creators earn under $150 a month while a tiny user minority compulsively funds a small creator minority — and the platform takes its cut from every transaction.

If you ever paid for adult subscription content, write down (just for yourself, no judgment) approximately how much you spent in the past 12 months. Most users underestimate.
