How to make porn blocking on your Mac harder to bypass

A Safari content blocker on a Mac has one weak spot, and it is worth knowing before you rely on it. When Safari blocks a page, it offers a "Reload Without Content Blockers" option, one click and the block is off for that page. Every Safari blocker has this, ours included. The fix on a Mac is a different layer that the reload trick cannot skip. Here is how to set it up.

Why the Safari blocker alone is not enough on a Mac

Escape's Safari blocker on a Mac does the everyday job well. It blocks the 11,868 known adult sites and any you add, and for most moments that is plenty of friction. But "Reload Without Content Blockers" is built into Safari, and it turns any content blocker off for a page with a single click and no password. That is the gap. It is not a flaw in any one blocker, it is how Safari content blockers work.

The layer the reload trick cannot skip

Apple's Screen Time has a setting called Limit Adult Websites. Unlike a content blocker, it filters at a level Safari's reload option does not reach, so the "Reload Without Content Blockers" trick cannot get past it. On a Mac, this is the bypass-resistant layer. Escape gives you one-tap guidance to turn it on, so you are not hunting through System Settings to find it.

How to turn it on

In Escape on your Mac, follow the one-tap guidance to Screen Time, or set it up yourself. Open System Settings, then Screen Time, then Content and Privacy, then Content Restrictions, and limit adult websites. Then set a Screen Time passcode that you do not hold yourself, the same idea as on a phone. That passcode is what turns a setting you could undo into one you have to ask someone else to undo.

Use both layers together

The two layers do different jobs, so use both. Escape's Safari blocker covers everyday browsing and the long list of sites with no setup. Screen Time's Limit Adult Websites adds the bypass-resistant floor underneath it. Together they cover far more than either alone, and the part that resists the reload trick is the Screen Time layer.

The honest part

No setup on a computer is truly unbeatable, because a Mac gives a determined person room to change settings if they hold the passcode. That is exactly why the passcode should sit with someone else. The goal is not a perfect cage. It is to make getting around the block a deliberate, awkward decision instead of a one-click reload.
