How to block specific words in Safari search on iPhone
You can block adult websites on an iPhone, but blocking a specific search word is a different thing, and Apple's built-in tools do not do it. Here is what Screen Time can and cannot do, and how to block the exact words you choose in Safari search, in both normal and private tabs.
Why Screen Time cannot block search words
Screen Time's Content Restrictions can Limit Adult Websites, and under Never Allow you can block specific site addresses. What it cannot do is block a specific search word. There is simply no setting for it, which catches a lot of people out. If your goal is to stop a particular word from ever returning results, Screen Time is the wrong tool, and no amount of digging through its settings will add that feature.
What actually blocks a search word
You need a content blocker that includes word blocking. Escape's Blocked Words is built for exactly this. You choose words you never want to search, and any Safari search for one of them just does not load. The results page is blocked before it opens, in both normal and private tabs, and across the major search engines, Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, YouTube, Yahoo, and more. It is precise. It blocks the search you type, so a word you have decided you are done with never returns a page again.
What it does not do, so you set it up right
Two honest limits, worth knowing up front. First, it is Safari-only. Word blocking cannot reach Chrome or other browsers, and that is an Apple limitation, not a choice on our end. Second, it blocks the searches you type in Safari, not the word wherever it happens to appear. It does not filter what shows up inside apps like TikTok or Instagram, and it does not scan pages for the word. It does one job cleanly: the word you type into Safari search does not return results.
Words in Safari, adult sites everywhere: the full picture
Blocked Words handles the words you search in Safari. For adult sites, Escape has a separate and stronger layer called Deep Block that covers every browser and private tabs. They are two distinct jobs: Blocked Words stops the search terms you choose in Safari, and Deep Block stops known adult sites across the phone. Run both and you have closed the two ways people actually slip, a search and a site.
Your words stay yours
Blocked Words is part of the paid upgrade. Like everything in Escape, your word list stays on your phone. There is no account, nothing is linked to you, and we never see the words you choose. The most private way to block a word is the one where no one else ever knows the word. If you want the recovery-focused version of this, the guide on blocking your own trigger searches goes there.
Escape blocks porn in Safari for free, extends to every browser with Deep Block, and adds a 90-second urge ritual, practice games that retrain how you meet an urge, and 27 short courses on identity and the long arc of recovery. No account, no personal tracking.
