PMO stands for porn, masturbation, orgasm — the full compulsive cycle that recovery communities like NoFap, r/pornfree, and Reboot Nation are working to interrupt. The acronym was popularized in the early 2010s by online communities trying to talk about the habit in semi-public spaces (Reddit, forums, group chats) without using the literal word in every sentence.

Most recovery frameworks treat the three components as one behavioral loop rather than three separate behaviors. The community model: in compulsive use, the porn is the cue, the masturbation is the action, and the orgasm is the reward — and that reward-loop is hypothesized to be what gets reinforced over months and years of repetition. The framework comes from broader addiction-cycle literature; the specific application to porn-recovery is more model than measurement.

Some communities distinguish "hard mode" (no porn, no masturbation, no orgasm) from "easy mode" (no porn, masturbation with a partner is fine). The research on whether one variant produces faster recovery than the other is anecdotal — peer-reviewed studies comparing them don't exist. Community reports describe meaningful subjective improvement (focus, libido normalization, partnered intimacy) most often clustering after the first 60-90 days of abstinence from all three, but that figure is from self-report patterns, not controlled trials.

If you're new to the vocabulary, "PMO-free since Day 1" or "no-PMO 14 days" is just shorthand for "I haven't done any of the three since then."
