How to stop doomscrolling at night
Doomscrolling at night is not a willpower problem. It is a tired brain, a bright screen and a feed that never ends. Here is why it is so hard to put the phone down, and a simple setup that does the stopping for you.
Why it is so hard to stop at night
- You are tired. By the end of the day, saying no takes more effort than it did in the morning.
- The feed never ends. There is always one more video, and nothing tells you that you are done.
- It feels like rest. Scrolling looks like winding down, but it keeps your mind busy long after you meant to sleep.
- You are alone with it. Nobody sees what you are doing, so nobody interrupts.
How it slides into worse
For a lot of people, the late-night scroll is where porn starts. A suggestive post, a link, a search you would never make at noon. Nothing about it is planned. It is just the next tap, at the hour when you are least able to stop. If that sounds familiar, late-night urges explains why 11pm hits hardest.
A setup that does the stopping
- Pick a stop time. 10pm is a good one. Decide it in the daytime, not in bed.
- Lock the apps you scroll. Choose the two or three apps that eat your nights and lock them at your stop time, every night.
- Charge the phone outside the bedroom. If it is not within reach, the scroll never starts. A cheap alarm clock does the job your phone used to.
- Give your hands something else. A book, music, or a podcast with the screen off.
- If you wake at 3am, leave it. Reaching for the phone is how one minute becomes an hour.
Where Escape helps
Escape lets you pick the apps you scroll and locks them for you. Its Late-Night window locks them every night from 10pm to 6am, so the decision is made before you are tired. Strict Mode adds a wait of 30, 60 or 120 minutes before anything can be turned off, so the half-asleep version of you cannot undo it in one tap. App blocking and Strict Mode are part of Premium. If the scroll ever drifts toward porn, Escape's free Safari blocker covers 40,000+ adult sites. It needs no account and collects nothing about you.
